Police hunting Angus derailment vandals seek youths seen in area

POLICE are closing in on vandals who derailed a train in Angus last month by seeking four youths spotted in the area.

• A CrossCountry train carrying 38 passengers and staff partially came off tracks near Inverkeilor on 4th November and is believed to have hit an object on the line

• Rail firms have offered £25,000 reward for information leading to the conviction

The group were seen just off the A92 road in Inverkeilor, the night before a CrossCountry train carrying 38 passengers and crew partially came off the tracks on 4 November.

British Transport Police said the youths, who were seen around 7:30pm on 3 November, “may be vital to the investigation”.

They are described as ranging from 5ft to 5ft 6in tall, with one wearing a grey or light coloured hooded top and trousers.

Rail firms have offered a £25,000 reward for information leading to a conviction for the incident, which is believed to have been caused by an object being placed on the line.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Miller, who is leading the investigation, said: “The youths were seen walking towards Bryanton House just off the A92. This would have been prior to the bonfire at Inverkeilor, the night before the incident occurred.

“It is important to trace these youths in order to eliminate them from our enquiries.”

Police also want to speak to anyone who was at the bonfire or took photographs.
