The body of a male was found in the Jacob’s Ladder part of the Cairngorms. No formal identification has been made but police said there are no outstanding missing persons in the area.

The force confirmed that the walkers were part of a larger group visiting the Highlands. The party were either from or connected to Leeds University.

The group were initially reported overdue on Sunday evening.

An RAF spokesman said five of the men were picked up by rescue helicopter 137, and confirmed that the five rescued hillwalkers were uninjured.

As well as the helicopter, the RAF had three other teams from Lossiemouth and Leuchars working on the ground.

None of the six hillwalkers have been identified.
