Old tyres could be used to resurface roads after successful trial on A90

OLD tyres could be used to resurface Scottish roads after the UK’s first major trial, on the A90 between Perth and Dundee for Transport Scotland, was declared successful by supplier Breedon Aggregates.

The firm claimed the new asphalt, which contains 10 per cent recycled tyres, was cheaper, greener and more durable than traditional materials.

A stretch of the dual carriageway, which carries some 35,000 vehicles a day, was covered last month with the mixture, which was produced using a new technique.

Breedon Aggregates Scotland chief executive Alan Mackenzie said: “This could transform our approach to road surfacing in the UK.

“Our industry has been trying for years to successfully incorporate recycled rubber into asphalt, without much success. Thanks to this new technology we can help change that.”

Transport Scotland welcomed the re-use of tyres but said it was still monitoring the trial stretch.
