‘No end in sight’ for Glasgow Subway disruption

THOUSANDS of passengers on the Glasgow Subway were today enduring a third day of disruption with no end in sight after tunnel repairs caused the system’s biggest problem for at least 15 years.

Parts of the outer circle - clockwise direction - remained closed, along with Cowcaddens station, with replacement buses being laid on over parts of the route.

Trains on the inner (anti-clockwise) circle of the six-mile system, which handles some 30,000 passengers a day, resumed normal service last night.

A reduced service was operating today on the outer circle between Govan and St George’s Cross stations.

Free return shuttle buses were taking passengers from Buchanan Street to St George’s Cross, Buchanan Street to Hillhead and Buchanan Street to Shields Road. Those travelling from Shields Road to Govan are having to take the long way round via the inner circle.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), which operates the 116-year-old Subway, said: “Staff are on hand to help at stations and we would like to again thank all our customers for their patience.”

She said the disruption had been caused after tunnel refurbishment work on Monday night to prepare for new signalling as part of a modernisation programme had “uncovered a section of tunnel lining which needed an unexpected repair.

“Specialist engineers are working round the clock to fix it.”

SPT was today still unable to say when the repair would be finished.
