MSPS clashed over plans for a public inquiry into the trams after one said he “relished” the prospect of hearings into the controversial project.

A cross-party panel of Holyrood politicians was asked about the proposed inquiry at an event organised by the Federation of Small Businesses in the Scottish Parliament last night.

Edinburgh Central SNP MSP Marco Biagi said he hoped it would be held “the sooner the better”. He said: “This is not something the First Minister has any fear about. I relish looking ahead to the prospect of this inquiry because there are very serious questions about the project.”

However, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said: “This is not an inquiry designed to get revenge for those who took a different view.”
