Some 15 staff are expected to lose their jobs at Scotland TranServ, which won a five-year contract in April to look after trunk roads in Glasgow and across south-west Scotland, including the M8.

The move comes as Mr Brown is due to open the organisation’s new Glasgow offices, at Oatlands House in Polmadie, on Tuesday.

The firm, a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel, said about 30 of its 300-strong workforce were “under consultation”, although some of these are expected to be redeployed.

A spokeswoman for the government’s Transport Scotland agency, which manages the maintenance contract, said: “While staff restructuring is a matter for Scotland TranServ, we fully expect them to fulfil their contractual obligations.”
