Mother and child among six hurt in A96 crash

A MOTHER and one of her three children were airlifted to hospital by an RAF helicopter following a horrific crash between a car and a van in Aberdeenshire in the early hours of this morning.

The father and two other children and the driver of the van were rushed by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after emergency services were called to the scene of the collision on the A96 Aberdeen to Elgin road, close to the Oyne fork.

Some of the casualties had to be cut free from the wreckage of the vehicles by firefighters. One of the children is said to be suffering from serious injuries.

The accident between a green Audi car and a white Volkswagen van happened around 3.30am, completely blocking the busy trunk route.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The collision, involving a car and a van, took place on the section of road between Pitcaple and the Oyne fork. There were five occupants of the car, a male and female adult and three children. The van was driven by a male.

“The female occupant of the car and one of the children have been airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, the child having sustained serious injuries.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a total of six casualties had been taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by road and air.

The A96 reopened to traffic at the crash scene shortly before 1pm.
