Man jailed for savage attack on Golden Retriever in Ayr

A MAN who battered a dog unconscious and threw it onto a road has today been jailed and banned from keeping animals.

John Poole punched and kicked the Golden Retriever, called Biscuit, flung it against a wall and hurled it into the street in front of shocked witnesses.

He then shouted, swore and threatened police called to the scene in Main Street, Ayr, on January 27.

Poole, 42, of the town, pled guilty to causing a protected animal unnecessary suffering by punching and kicking it on the head and body, injuring it.

He also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour towards police officers.

Ayr Sheriff Court earlier heard Poole had alcohol issues and was already subject to an unrelated court order.

Sheriff Carole Cunningham jailed Poole for four months and imposed an order banning him from owning or keeping any animal for four years.

Biscuit has since been re-homed, the court heard.
