The incident happened after a group of male youths on the Balloch to Airdrie train got off at Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire around 11pm last Saturday.

A BTP spokesman said the victim had woken up the sleeping youth, who had short dark hair and was wearing a grey tracksuit, “to let him know his companions had left the train.

“A struggle ensued and the victim was bitten and punched several times. The suspect forced open the train doors as it approached Dalreoch station [in Dumbarton] and made off across the railway line.”

Officers are trying to identify the youth using CCTV footage.

The force said the victim was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Detective Constable John McPhilemy, said: “I am aware that the train was busy at the time and I am anxious to trace anyone who present and has information which can help our enquiry to contact BTP.”
