Lorry drivers killed in head-on crash on A9 named

THE two lorry drivers who died in a horrific head-on crash on the A9 last Friday have been named as Alexander Russell, 37, of Moodiesburn, Glasgow, and John Sommerville, 34, of Carluke in Lanarkshire.

The men were were killed when an articulated lorry carrying barrels of whisky smashed into a northbound lorry carrying newspapers to Inverness on a single-carriageway stretch of the notorious road at Calvine, north of Blair Atholl.

The road was closed for 18 hours after the 2am crash for investigation work and to clear the site.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said: “Both families are understandably upset by their sudden loss and have said that they will both be greatly missed.

“Enquiries into the full set of circumstances are still ongoing and officers would appeal to anyone who was travelling on the A9 between Perth and Drumochter between midnight and 3am on Friday, 1 June, or who may have seen either of the two lorries involved to contact Tayside Police.

The vehicles involved were a silver and burgundy articulated lorry and a blue Iveco lorry.
