Latest version of aircraft is designed to be jack of all trades

Introduced into general use in 2004, the French-built Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma Mk II was designed as a long-range passenger transporter, capable of carrying up to 24 passengers along with two crew and a cabin attendant.

Weighing 11 tonnes, it has twin engines and a five-bladed rotor to provide optimum reliability and lift. It is capable of speeds of up to 171mph, with a cruising speed of 162mph and a range of 533 miles.

The central structure is reinforced with rigid frames, to maintain its integrity in the event of a crash. It also has an anti-icing system to enable it to operate in very cold climates. Since its introduction, it has been adapted for fire fighting and rescue capacity, being fitted with water bombing kits and all-weather radar.

First adopted by Algeria, the helicopters are in general use around the world. Eight are used by Bristow Helicopters in the North Sea, while Bond Offshore Helicopters operate them from Aberdeen to oil and gas platforms.

Its multi-weather capacity means it may replace Westland’s Sea King as the Norwegian All Weather Search and Rescue Helicopter in 2015.
