Glasgow Subway to close for four weeks in 2016

Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) announced today that services will be suspended at the start of the school summer holidays next year to allow modernisation work to be carried out.

The work affects the section of the system known which permits trains to access the tunnels from the surface depot and cross over between Inner and Outer Circles. This part of the system was installed almost 40 years ago and must be fully replaced to ensure reliable Subway service for future operation.

Following an engineering assessment, SPT they were left with no option but to close to route for the duration of the works.

The transport body say a “comprehensive” bus solution will be provided between stations and significantly supplemented with specific station to station trips to reflect current passenger commuting movements to and from the city at peak times including our park and ride sites. These services will operate on the same opening hours as at present.

SPT Chairman Councillor Jim Coleman said: “It is always disappointing when we have to suspend a vital public transport service.

“However safety is not something the partnership is prepared to compromise on and undertaking this vital upgrade when passenger numbers are at their lowest during the summer will minimise disruption for our customers.

“Although we are suspending Subway train services SPT will take care of providing an alternative so there is no need for our loyal customers to do anything other than turn up at the station as they normally do, allow a little longer for the journey, and leave the rest to us.

“We have vast experience in dealing with moving people for major events such as last year’s Commonwealth Games and T in the Park.”
