Gearing up for decision on speed limit

A DECISION on whether to raise motorway speed limits is to be revealed “very shortly”.

UK ministers launched a consultation last year on plans to replace the 70mph limit with an 80mph maximum, amid claims cars and roads are safer than they were when the original limit were set.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening said: “We are absolutely committed to making sure we strike the right balance between looking at these important issues and making sure we do what we can to maintain and improve motorway safety.”

The UK government has said the 80mph limit could be introduced next year, but Scottish ministers may have the final say north of the Border, as they are due to take control of national speed limits as part of the Scotland Bill, which is due to be passed this year. The Scottish Government has given no indication of whether it is likely to back an 80mph limit.
