The Forth Bridge will be lit up after completion of repainting the railway crossing last autumn - a coat which should last for some 25 years.

Switching the 1,054 floodlights back on will coincide with the 122nd anniversary on Sunday of the bridge being opened.

The lights were installed in 1991 and have been refurbished as part of the painting work.

David Simpson, route managing director of Network Rail Scotland, which owns the bridge, said: “It will be great to see the bridge lit again after years of darkness. Following the restoration work, the bridge is looking at its magnificent best again and I’m sure the local area will once again benefit from being able to see the structure by night.”

The lights will be switched off again for one hour at 8:30pm on Saturday, 31 March, as part of environmental campaigners WWF’s Earth Hour, to raise awareness of climate change.
