“The pilot, a 75-year-old man from the Edinburgh area, was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with a suspected back injury. The glider was extensively damaged in the crash. No other gliders or people were involved in the collision”

He added: “The Air Accidents Investigations Branch has been informed and will likely carry out its own investigation into the incident.”

On 4 September last year, Mark Dickson, 49, from Troon in Ayrshire, was killed at the gliding centre on the shores of Loch Leven when his glider crashed during take-off.

His single-seat glider, a Schempp-Hirth Nimbus-3 aircraft, was only a matter of feet off the ground when the plane crashed as it was being winched into the air. Mr Dickson’s body was found inside the cockpit of the overturned carbon fibre fuselage.
