The fire service crews from Newcraighall, Tollcross, Sighthill and Musselburgh were called to a collision between a caravan and two cars on the eastbound carriageway between Gilmerton and the Sheriffhall roundabout at 1.15pm, a spokeswoman said.

“We used hydraulic cutting gear to remove two casualties,” she said.

The second incident involved four vehicles and closed the eastbound carriageway near to the Gilmarton off-ramp for approximately an hour, said police.

Fire crews from Liberton, Dalkeith and Newcraighall attended the scene and rescued two casualties, with one removed prior to their arrival, a fire service spokeswoman said.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene of the first collision at 12.50pm and took four patients to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. At 1.20pm they attended the second incident and transported two other people to the ERI.

All were reported to have minor injuries, a spokesman for the ambulance service said.
