Edinburgh airport sees millionth passenger in month

Scotland’s busiest airport announced today it had passed the milestone for July with a day to go till the end of the month.

It has handled an average of 32,000 passengers a day this month - which airport chiefs described as the population of Stirling.

The airport returned to growth in May after nearly a year in the doldrums, including because of the ending of BMI flights to Heathrow - its busiest route.

Chief executive Gordon Dewar said: “A million plus passengers in one month is a fantastic achievement.

“Now we’ve hit this milestone, we want to make sure this is not a one-off and we continue to grow and offer our passengers choice, excellent service and efficiency.”

The airport, the UK’s sixth busiest, handles 9.2 million passengers a year, who fly with more than 40 airlines to over 100 destinations.

It had a record June, with passengers up by 8.4 per cent to nearly 957,000 thanks to new routes by EasyJet, Ryanair and Virgin Atlantic..

July’s passenger total is due to be announced in two weeks’ time.
