Its passengers at Scotland’s busiest airport, and those at Stansted, Southend, Manchester, Amsterdam and Nice, will be able to check in on their iPhone or Android handsets via a free app.

Windows phone 7/8 and Blackberry devices will be added to the trial later this year.

The move comes three years after British Airways introduced the service on its flights, but EasyJet passengers can check in up to 30 days before take-off compared to BA’s 24 hours.

EasyJet said it would take passengers fewer than ten seconds to check in and store boarding passes on their phones, including for families travelling together.

Marketing Director Peter Duffy said: “We know from passenger feedback that it will be a popular addition to our award-winning app. Building on the success of the app, which is the fastest airline app on the market, mobile boarding passes is the next important step in our aim to make travel easy and affordable.”

Lufthansa and KLM also offer the service, but they carry far fewer passengers from Scotland than EasyJet.
