Its engineers were last night filling the hole with 20 tonnes of stones in wire baskets, topped with six tonnes of ballast

A spokesman said: “It is having a big effect on trains.”

Services affected included trains to and from London, Birmingham, Dunbar, North Berwick and Newcraighall.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: “Due to a sink hole near the line in the Craigentinny area, some services have been suspended for safety reasons.

“We are working with Network Rail to re-open the line as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Alternative transport is in place for customers, and we apologise for any

inconvenience caused by circumstances outwith our control.”
