Driver crushed to death by lorry on North Uist

AN investigation is being carried out after a driver was found crushed to death under an overturned HGV on North Uist.

The lorry driver has been named as 40-year-old Steven Buchanan, of Liniclate, Benbecula.

Emergency services were called to the B894 Clachan-Sidinish road, near a salmon farm shore base operated by the Scottish Salmon Company at Locheport.

The lorry was found on its side with Mr Buchanan trapped underneath.

He had worked for Buchanan Haulage, owned by his father, John Alick Buchanan, of Creagorry. Buchanan leaves a wife and two young boys.

A police spokesman said: “As a result of the incident the male occupant of the HGV was pronounced dead at the scene.”

He added: “We can confirm the identity of the male driver of a Heavy Goods Vehicle who sadly died on Saturday 05 October 2013 at Locheport, Isle of North Uist as Steven John Buchanan, of Liniclate, Benbecula.

“A multi agency investigation into the circumstances surrounding this death is ongoing.

“A report surrounding the circumstances has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

“Steven’s family thank all those who have provided support and comfort to them at this sad time.”
