Driver of car involved in fatal crash dies in hospital

The driver of a car which crashed into a lorry in Fife earlier this week, killing an eight-year-old boy, has also died, police have said.

The female driver was seriously injured in the crash on the A92, north of the Redhouse Roundabout on Monday afternoon.

The eight-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred on the northbound carriageway between Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.

A second boy, aged nine, who was also a passenger within the car, sustained serious injuries to his face and is being treated in hospital after the Ford Focus car the group was travelling in collided with a lorry.

The female driver was taken to Victoria Hospital, but died from her injuries yesterday afternoon.

A 36-year-old male passenger and the driver of the Iveco lorry were not injured.

The road was closed for seven hours on Monday afternoon while police tried to establish the cause of the accident.

Drivers were diverted via Thornton and motorists were advised to avoid the area where possible.

Inspector Brenda Sinclair from Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Tragically this collision has resulted in a second death and our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved.

“A full investigation to determine what happened is ongoing and I would reiterate our appeal for witnesses.”

She added: “If you saw this collision take place, or if you have information relevant to our inquiries then please contact police immediately.”

It is believed that the family were not local and may have been on holiday in the area.

Official figures released last year showed that 28 more people were killed on Scotland’s roads in 2014 than in the previous 12 months. There were 200 fatalities in 2014, a rise of 16 per cent on the previous year.

The government figures showed that the 200 road deaths included 93 car users, 56 pedestrians, 31 motorcyclists and eight pedal cyclists.

In January, a pedestrian was killed in the Fife village of Collessie after being struck by a car on the A91.
