Commuters on the rails

CAPITAL rail commuters are spending an average of 11 per cent of their salary on getting to work, new figures show.

The PayNet UK Salary Tracker, compiled by management firm Hay Group, showed the latest train fare rises would mean travel to work costs eating up around eight per cent of people’s salaries on average.

In Edinburgh, the tracker put average salaries at £16,226 and the average season ticket at £1846. Hay said as ticket prices continued to eat into salaries, employers needed to consider how to help employees by offering flexible working and free loans for season tickets.
