City centre braced for next round of tram track works

TRAM tracks are about to be extended into Edinburgh’s St Andrew Square, with preliminary work to remove remaining underground pipes and cables getting under way tomorrow.

The east side of the square, including North and South St Andrew Street, will be shut, with traffic switched to the west side.

The city council said the work site would extend on to Princes Street as far west as Waverley Bridge, with “major infrastructure work” to follow next month.

Shandwick Place, west of Princes Street, will be closed for similar work from Saturday, 14 January, with vehicles diverted via Melville Street and the West Approach Road. Traders in William Street and Stafford Street have urged pedestrians to take a detour past their shops. Sarah Connelly, of Odyssey Boutique, said: “We’re doing all we can to not just survive, but thrive.”
