Charcoal dust crash leaves 4 in hospital

Four people are being treated in hospital after inhaling charcoal dust spilled in a crash involving two lorries.

The accident happened at around 5.50am on the M74 near Annan in Dumfries and Galloway.

One of the lorries was carrying the charcoal which spilled on to the road, closing two lanes of the motorway.

No one was injured in the crash itself but four people who inhaled some of the carbon dust from the spillage were treated by paramedics and taken to Dumfries Royal Infirmary.

Firefighters wearing chemical suits and oxygen canisters cleared the road of the charcoal which was removed by Scottish Environmental Protection Agency officers.
