Bus firm pays tribute to centenarian Agnes, Britain’s oldest passenger

A BUS company has paid tribute to a 100-year-old thought to be the oldest bus passenger in the UK.

Agnes Willens is a regular on First Scotland East’s bus service in North Berwick.

She catches the X24 bus from outside her house to the town centre almost every day. First Scotland East bus driver and employee director, John Lyall, said: “Agnes has been catching the X24 Service for 
as long as anyone can remember.

“She is definitely First Scotland East’s oldest customer, and probably the most popular. We can’t find any evidence of there being an older customer in the UK. She is a real inspiration.”

The bus operator helped Agnes celebrate her 100th birthday by presenting her with flowers and changing the sign on a double decker to “Happy 100th”.

Agnes was born in Dunbar on April 21, 1913 and married her husband Thomas Willens in 1933 – the couple went on to have two children, William and Robert.

William Willens said: “She has always enjoyed music and dancing – in fact at her 100th birthday party she was up at least six times dancing to some of her favourite tunes.

“She has never smoked or drank and was always a hard worker, which might explain why she is so youthful.”
