Broken traffic lights cause severe delays

BROKEN traffic lights in the centre of Edinburgh are causing severe delays to traffic.

Engineers are working to fix a computer fault which is affecting traffic light sequences at various junctions in the city centre.

The Haymarket, Gorgie and Dalry areas are worst affected, along with delays on George Street.

To help ease congestion, council technicians are attempting to manually fix the sequences at individual traffic lights as an interim measure.

Councillor Gordon Mackenzie, transport leader at the city council, said: “Computer engineers are working hard to fix the fault which is causing these unforeseen problems. To help ease congestion our technicians are also attempting to fix various traffic lights by hand.

“I apologise to motorists for any delays they have experienced. In the meantime I would ask motorists, especially those travelling through the west of the city, to only make journeys if necessary and to use an alternative route, as we try to fix the problem.”

The public are advised to listen to local radio for updates and follow Twitter feeds from Lothian Buses and the council .
