Appeal after elderly cyclist attacked in Dundee

AN elderly cyclist has suffered a double fracture to his cheekbone in a vicious and unprovoked attack by another man on a bicycle in Dundee, it was revealed today.

The 70-year-old male cyclist was seriously injured after he was assaulted by a fellow cyclist yesterday afternoon .

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “He had been cycling in the Nethergate area of Dundee City Centre at about 12.45pm to 1pm when another cyclist – a man believed to be aged about 50 - seemed to take umbrage at him and shouted at him, near to Nandos restaurant.

“The elder of the two men cycled on, down Union Street, onto Greenmarket and along Seabraes to the cycle path behind Sensation. It was then that he realised the other cyclist had been following him and so he stopped.

“The other man then got off his bike, approached the 70-year-old swore at him and assaulted him, knocking him off of his bike. He then cycled off towards Riverside Drive, near the railway bridge.”

The spokesman continued: “Shocked by the incident, the injured man cycled home and, a short time later, was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital where it was confirmed he had suffered a double fracture of his cheekbone.”

His attacker is described as being about 5ft 9ins tall, of stocky build, with grey hair and grey stubble. At the time of the attack he was wearing grey-coloured clothing.

The force spokesman said: “Officers are currently carrying out an extensive review of public and private CCTV, but would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incidents in Nethergate or Seabraes, or who saw the cyclists anywhere in between, to call 101, or speak to any officer.”
