The busy road is expected to be closed for some time and traffic is being diverted via the B966 through Brechin.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “A woman – understood to be in her early 40s - has died after the car she was driving was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry on the southbound carriageway of the A90, near to Stracathro in Angus shortly after 5am today.

“Emergency services were quick to attend at the collision, but tragically the woman, who was driving a dark-coloured Ford vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was hurt as a result of the incident.”

The spokeswoman added: “The southbound carriageway is currently closed and is likely to remain so for some time while crash investigators carry out a thorough examination of the scene. Diversions are in place. The woman’s details will not be released until she has been formally identified and next of kin have been fully informed. Police Scotland would appeal to anyone who witnessed the time of the incident to call them on 101, or speak to any officer. “

Police sources have confirmed that the articulated lorry was parked in a lay-by when the crash happened.

A force spokeswoman said: “We are still investigating the full circumstances surrounding the accident.”
