Flights in and out of the airport were either delayed or diverted to Edinburgh after the airport and almost 400 businesses and homes in the Dyce area of city were affected by an electricity cut between 7.30pm and 10.30pm.

The power cut was traced to fault in a sub station.

An airport spokeswoman said: “There were some delays but we only had a small number of cancelled flights. The last Lufthansa flight last night was diverted to Edinburgh and the passengers got bussed up to Aberdeen and therefore the plane was not here for the first Lufthansa flight this morning.

“Easyjet cancelled a couple of their flights yesterday but they brought the aircraft up and have added on two extra flights today to make sure that passengers can reach their destinations.”

The spokeswoman continued: “Thankfully, at the time that the flights were being cancelled and the worst of the power cut was on, there was still a little bit of light in the sky. By the time the flights were cancelled and those passengers were safely on their way home, there were very few people left in the terminal. We also had emergency lights in key parts of the airport.”

She added: “We are in the process of getting to the bottom of exactly what happened.”
