A1 Crash: Pigs escape from truck after serious collision involving car and tractor puts three people in hospital

Three people have been taken to hospital after a pile up on the A1 involving a lorry carrying a cargo of pigs this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10:30am, after a lorry, a tractor with a trailer, and a car collided near Cockburnspath.

Photos from the scene show the lorry on its side and the damaged tractor lying across both lanes of the carriageway.

The owner of a nearby burger van is thought to have hurried to the crash site and helped the lorry driver get out of his cabin.

Police confirmed that three people injured in the incident were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment, but it is understood that none of their injuries are life-threatening.

Images also show fire engines at the scene, and an air ambulance landing in a nearby field.

An eyewitness on the A1 said that when the truck flipped onto its side, its cargo of pigs managed to escape and ran across the carriageway.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A1 at 10:30am today.

Police said the road remains closed while the vehicles involved are recovered.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.30am on Monday, 16 November 2020, officers were called to a report of a three vehicle crash involved a tractor and trailer, an HGV and a car on the A1 near Cockburnspath.

"Three men have been taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

"The road remains closed and local diversions are in place."
