4x4 driver injured in crash with train

The driver of the train and 11 passengers were also injured in the incident and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. None of them was seriously hurt, police said.

The 18-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4, was seriously injured in the crash at Little Genoch, Dunragit village, near Stranraer, yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to hospital in Glasgow for specialist treatment for his injuries, police said.

Eleven passengers were on the train, which operates between Glasgow and Ayr to Stranraer, when the collision took place at the crossing, which is manually operated.

None of the passengers suffered serious injuries, but most of them were taken to hospital, where they received treatment for shock and bruising, police said.

Other passengers on the train and a number of residents from nearby houses rushed to helpthe injured people until the emergency services arrived at the scene.

The crash took place not far from the main A75 Gretna-Stranraer trunk road at Dunragit village.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Police said: “The crash involved a Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4 and a two-carriage train which was travelling between Glasgow and Stranraer.

“The driver of the vehicle has been removed from the scene by ambulance with what are described as serious injuries,” the spokesman added.

“The driver of the train and the passengers have been conveyed to the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer.

“It is not thought that anyone has any serious injuries,” the police spokesman said.

The rail line remained closed last night to enable British Transport Police to find the cause of the accident.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident, which happened just before 2pm.
