Touchdown time as legendary rugby commentator’s notes up for auction

A RARE copy of legendary Scots rugby commentator Bill McLaren’s notes on a historic Scottish victory over England are set to raise a small fortune for charity ahead of the two nations’ Calcutta Cup clash this weekend.

A limited edition print of McLaren’s pre-match notes for Scotland’s 19-13 victory at Murrayfield in 2000 is up for grabs, signed by fly-half Duncan Hodge, who scored all of the home side’s points that day.

It is being auctioned by the veteran seven-a-side team Xodus Steelers as part of the build-up to this weekend’s Calcutta Cup showdown between Scotland and England. Mr McLaren recorded every detail of the match on a large blank piece of paper to create what his family call “Bill’s Big Sheet”.

The detailed notes include information taken from his database about players, officials and the ground.

Mr Hodge said yesterday he was proud to add his name to such a notable memento.

He said: “It was an incredible day and one which I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Bidding for the sheet reached £760 on eBay yesterday and the auction will end on Saturday.

The money raised will be split between the Bill McLaren Foundation, which was set up in the commentator’s name after his death two years ago, and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.
