Tories pick candidate

TORIES have selected businessman and community activist Iain McGill as their candidate in the crucial City Centre council by-election.

The Conservatives polled the second most first-preference votes in the ward in the 2007 council elections, but only 278 votes separated all five main parties, making it the closest-fought in the city.

If the SNP loses, it could remove the Liberal Democrat-SNP coalition's grip on power.

Mr McGill has been a political activist for ten years and has stood four times in parliamentary elections.

He said: "The people of City Centre ward can be the ones to punish the coalition for their record with the tram project."
