Teams from Maryhill and Springburn went to the scene, just after 8.30pm, where they found the fire to be “well-developed” in a second-floor communal area.

A number of residents were calling for help from the upper floor windows, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said.

The man and one woman were helped to safety by firefighters using a rescue ladder. They were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and were looked after by paramedics at the scene.

Firefighters using breathing equipment also entered the building and helped another woman to safety.

Two of the casualties were later taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Firefighters said the blaze was dealt with quickly and its cause is being investigated.

The fire service also warned residents about the dangers of storing flammable items in communal areas.

A spokesman said: “The quick thinking actions of our fire crews have resulted in three rescues and prevented any serious injuries from occurring. But this incident had the potential to cause real harm.

“Whilst it is too early to say what caused this fire, we would ask all people resident in flats with communal areas to refrain from using these areas for the storage of combustible items such as old furniture or electrical items. Actions such as this increase the potential for a serious fire to occur and put all residents at risk.”
