A police spokesman said: "While the victim's injuries are not life-threatening, he still suffered a serious chest wound. We are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect."

Earlier in the day, a 33-year-old man was targeted by four men while walking on Leopard Place towards London Road.

One of the gang punched him without warning, and the victim fell and hit his head on the pavement, police said. The men walked off towards Elm Row.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesperson said: "This was a completely unprovoked attack which has left the victim seriously injured."

Another violent assault, on Monday morning, saw a man in his 20s seriously hurt in Leith.

Police said the victim suffered a serious head injury in the 1am attack.

Residents who live in the same block of flats as the victim claimed he had been beaten and stabbed in the building before being taken over the road and dumped on an old mattress next to a bin store in the Cable Wynd area.

He was rushed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and he remains in a critical condition.

Two men have been detained in connection with the incident, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
