Earlier the same day a 33-year-old man was targeted while he was walking towards London Road.

The victim was walking alone when he was approached by four males on Leopold Place.

One of the group punched him in the face without warning and the victim fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement.

The men then walked off towards Elm Row.

Another violent assault yesterday morning saw a man in his 20s left in a serious condition in Leith.

Police said the victim suffered a serious head injury in the 1am attack.

He was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and was in a critical condition last night.

Two men have been detained in connection with the incident, and police are appealing for any potential witnesses to come forward.
