Three city men in running to join row to North Pole

A WAR veteran, a Royal Marine Commando and a student have been shortlisted for a crew to make the first record attempt to row to the North Pole.

War veteran Neil Marshall, 39, Marine Rory Paterson, 22, and student Peter Wyrsch, 20, could take part in a unique global competition: Old Pulteney Pole Position.

The three Edinburgh residents will battle it out today against international competitors to prove they have what it takes to join the Old Pulteney Row to the Pole with renowned adventurer, Jock Wishart.

In August 2011, adventurer and sportsman Jock Wishart will lead a six-strong crew through some of the harshest conditions on earth in an attempt to row to the magnetic North Pole.

He said: "The competition has attracted a huge volume of international entries, all of an incredibly high standard. When you're planning an Arctic expedition, the most important thing is your crew."
