Thaw and flood warning

Lothian and Borders fire service is warning Edinburgh residents about the risk of flooding from burst pipes and thawing snow.

It has issued a 12-point list advising people to make sure they know how to turn off water, electricity, gas and oil-fired heating, and to leave taps slightly open if they suspect pipes are frozen, to allow the water to escape when it thaws.

It also reminding householders to make sure they have adequate insurance against flooding and keep a list of useful contacts, including a plumber, in a safe place.

The fire service also warns members of the public not to walk or drive through flood water, and to avoid contact with it, as it could be contaminated with sewage or conducting an electrical current.
