Teenage girl killed after plunging four storeys from tenement roof

A SCHOOLGIRL has fallen to her death from the roof of a four-storey building in Ayrshire.

Kayleigh Scott, 15, fell around 60 feet from the top of a tenement on to the street, just yards from the tourism centre in Ayr, South Ayrshire.

The teenager from Tarbolton is believed to have been on the roof, which sits over four storeys of flats, small businesses and a pub, with a group of friends at the time of the incident.

Ambulance crews attended and took her to Ayr Hospital, where she died a short time later.

She was a pupil at Belmont Academy in Ayr. Headmaster Alan Moir said: “I was devastated to learn of the tragic death of our pupil this morning and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

“Due to the summer holidays, it’s not possible to bring everyone together as we would normally do in such tragic circumstances but we’re doing everything we can to contact friends from the school to offer them support, someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on.

“We’re a very close school community in Belmont and, in time, we’ll consider how we want to remember her as a part of our school community but today our focus is on those affected by this tragic news and doing what we can to help and support them.”

Officers cordoned off the street, opposite the town’s busy bus station, following the incident at 11:40pm on Wednesday.

Her family laid flowers at the scene yesterday afternoon.

The message on the card read: “Loved and missed forever.

“Sleep safe our precious little angel, all our love, hugs and kisses.

“Mum, dad, Jodie and little Rubi.”

Barry Mitchell, 24, a builder and joiner working nearby, said: “I arrived here in the morning and there were police cars

everywhere.

“There were police on the roof with all the forensic gear on. It’s terrible. She’s just a young girl. It’s very sad.”

Another witness, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s very shocking. I crossed that road 30 seconds before it happened to leave work.

“You don’t expect things like this to happen on your doorstep.”

Police placed a cordon over the street throughout yesterday afternoon while forensics teams wearing white suits and masks examined the building.

Speaking from the scene, Strathclyde Police chief inspector Neil Kerr, area commander for South Ayrshire, said: “Police are investigating a tragic incident that happened on Fullarton Street in Ayr.

“The investigation is at an early stage and police are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and contact the girl’s family.”

He added: “If anyone was in the area at the time of the incident, please contact the police.”
