Taysiders hand in over £50k in lost cash to police

OVER £50,000 of lost cash was handed in to Tayside Police by members of the public last year, according to new figures.

Freedom of Information requests reveal that over 6,000 people across Scotland handed money in to their local police station between October 2011 and October 2012. The total sum reported as returned stands at over £145,000, but the actual figure could be even higher as several police authorities could not, or did not, give figures.

One Tayside citizen presented police with over £7,500 in misplaced cash, and as the amount was never claimed it was given to the finder.

Citizens in Grampian handed over £48,000 to police, while those in Glasgow and Edinburgh turned in just under £25,000 and almost £17,000 respectively.
