Tar sands protesters to target US consulate

A DEMONSTRATION is planned outside the US Consulate in Edinburgh tomorrow in protest over the use of tar sands.

Activists in Washington DC encircled the White House on Friday demanding that President Obama rejects the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

The action builds on August’s Keystone XL pipeline protests, one of the largest ever civil disobedience climate actions, resulting in over 1200 arrests in Washington DC.

The protesters claim that the processing of tar sands into oil massively contributes to climate change.

On Friday, demonstrators outside the consulate on Regent Road displayed a banner reading: “Keep your hands off the Sands. OilBama, are you Key-stoned?”

Lewis White, from People and Planet Edinburgh, said: “The local and global environmental destruction the digging of tar sands is causing is unacceptable.

“We need to show Obama that the world is watching and that we cannot accept a go-ahead with this pipeline if we are going to make any progress with curbing runaway climate change.”
