ANTICIPATION is building for the birth of the royal baby, with the nation getting ready to celebrate and the Queen getting ready to go on holiday.

And the excitement has hit the Capital, too, with a hotel offering a free bottle of bubbly to one lucky person who checks in after the birth and shares the same first name as the regal tot.

The celebratory giveaway is being held at The Jury’s Inn – and the most fancied names are Alexandra, Elizabeth, George, James or Diana.

Author’s patriotism for better or verse

EDINBURGH author Alexander McCall Smith has made millions happy with his tales of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency and the unfortunate Bertie from Scotland Street. Now in an emotive three-line, 17-syllable haiku for the website of glossy magazine Harper’s Bazaar, he’s written about where he finds happiness.

He wrote: “Happy you shall be

If love be over Scotland;

That, my wish for you.”

The haiku will appear on the site along with other bestselling writers.

FOR her fans, Jessie J’s gig at the Castle was a chance to see their idol strut her stuff. For those living nearby, however, it was not entirely welcome, with one resident tweeting: “Jessie J is playing at Edinburgh Castle tonight. I can hear her sound checking from 1km away. Her caterwaul defies physics. And taste.”

strangers. For others, presumably, such forwardness probably leads to a few smiles being wiped from faces instead.
