Sweet art: Degree show is icing on the cake for students

ARTIST Connie Viney's cake shop - made entirely from cake, pictured above - is one of the star attractions at this year's Edinburgh College of Art degree show.

Jewellery based on Japanese architecture and a device that emits smells to comfort dementia sufferers are among the other work from some 400 students.

The college claims its students no longer see themselves as architects, sculptors, painters, or film makers, but as artists working across different media. Work by Mariko Sumioka, from Japan, is inspired by architectural shapes and the colours of natural materials.

Photography graduate Clare Bentham is showing Heroes, portraits of workers in the emergency services, while Rachel Duke's Welcome Home project is for a device which emits specific smells, designed to help dementia patients adjust to moving to a care home by providing comforting familiar smells.
