Suspect has brain surgery

One of two men in police custody charged with the murder of British honeymooner Anni Dewani has had surgery to remove a brain tumour.

Xolile Mngeni is in hospital, prosecutor Rodney de Kock told the South African court where he was due to appear yesterday.

The other suspect, Mziwandoda Qwabe, stood alone in the dock for the second time and was remanded in custody to 2 August.

Mrs Dewani was shot dead last year in Gugulethu township, near Cape Town.

South African police believe her husband, Shrien, paid four men to shoot his 28-year-old bride in the back of a taxi in Cape Town on 13 November in a staged hijacking. He is fighting extradition from the UK.
