Stage actress Elaine C Smith, who is playing Ms Boyle in the acclaimed musical tour, left the stage after the final song, with many fans beginning to leave their seats before the real Ms Boyle emerged. As exclusive pictures taken by the Evening News reveal, Ms Boyle went on to wow the audience before posing alongside the cast.

And the Britain’s Got Talent finalist enjoyed the experience so much she returned on Saturday for the matinee performance.

One theatre-goer said the audience “went absolutely bananas” when the real West Lothian-born singer began her set. Stunned staff at the Festival and King’s Theatre, who appeared not to know about the impromptu appearance, wrote on Twitter: “Woohoo! Guess who’s just shown up to perform at the end of the show? #Subo the LEGEND is currently setting #IDreamed
ADream on fire!”

Audience member Euan Jardine wrote after the show: “Susan Boyle the musical was great and was topped off by Susan Boyle appearing and singing a few songs at the end #suborules”

I Dreamed A Dream is currently on an acclaimed tour and is running until September 29. Among those in the audience was Forth One presenter Grant Stott. He told the News: “I’d heard rumours that she may be appearing but even right up until the moment we didn’t know.”
