Survey work to begin on city trenches

Archaeologists are to begin survey work on the Capital’s First World War practice trenches this week.

It follows an Evening News campaign to save the trenches at Dreghorn Barracks from being lost to nature.

The MoD’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) archaeologists will work with specialists from Glasgow University’s Centre for Battlefield Archaeology to uncover the full extent of the site.

The city council has allocated £3500 to allow the non-intrusive survey to take place.

The team will chart the route and condition of trenches at Dreghorn Woods before making recommendations for future management of the site.

City culture leader Richard Lewis said: “The council has a duty to preserve Edinburgh’s rich cultural heritage and I am delighted that we have identified funding to take this fantastic project forward.”
