Students warned over scam

STUDENTS have been warned to beware of organised criminal gangs who are targeting colleges in Scotland. Victims are being asked to cash fraudulent cheques in exchange for a share of the money.

A man aged 20, has been arrested by Lothian and Borders Police after cashing a fake cheque worth more than 16,000. Officers were investigating similar transactions where students have paid fake cheques into their bank accounts and withdrawn the money almost immediately.

It is believed that the majority of students targeted were foreign nationals.
