Students ready to control city’s Big Screen Olympics broadcasting

FOUR city students are to take control of Scotland’s only “live site” for the London Olympics.

The group from Edinburgh Napier University will be running the BBC’s Big Screen in the Capital’s Festival Square after the corporation trained them up as live events co-ordinators.

The 25 square metre display is designed to bring news, interactive events and live coverage of the 2012 Games directly into the city. It is part of a network of 22 BBC Big Screens across the UK and is the only one in Scotland.

Digital Media students Tom McDermott, Joanna Jamrozy, Chris Gordon and Roisin Clarke were put through their paces by top producers during a three-day course at the BBC’s headquarters in Glasgow. The students will be responsible for getting the right coverage and sound levels on the screen.

Richard Hetherington, computing lecturer at Napier, said: “Those who took part in the recent training really appreciated the experience and see their roles as as a way of enhancing their employability.”
