Students at prize-giving celebrations

STUDENTS at Newbattle Abbey College have been honoured at the annual prize giving ceremony.

The event, held on Saturday, saw 34 students receive certificates after completing the year-long Arts and Humanities Award, which covers everything from politics to creative writing.

Among them was Sarah Hingston, who was awarded the Murray Prize for the most promising history student.

The 22-year-old said: “It is amazing to receive recognition for the work I have done this year, especially as this is the field of study I am entering into.

“My degree is in ancient and medieval history at Edinburgh University and I feel that this is an excellent start to my ­studies.”

Newbattle Abbey College principal Ann Southwood added: “The annual prize giving marks a symbolic end to the 12 months of hard work.”
