Student denies killing city skier in crash

AN American student has pleaded not guilty to killing a champion skier from Edinburgh who died while cycling in the United States.

Craig Macfie, 24, from Morningside, was hit by a car as he was riding in Eugene, Oregon, on November 18.

Mr Macfie, who was studying at the University of Oregon, died in hospital the following day.

Yesterday, fellow student Patrick Joseph Compton was warned he could face a mandatory minimum prison term of six years and three months if convicted under Oregon law.

Compton, 21, pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree manslaughter and drink-driving in connection with the 2.30am crash that killed Mr Macfie.

After his death, his brother, Alastair, 22, said his family would miss the former George Watson’s pupil “dreadfully”.

Mr Macfie won a string of skiing titles and was part of the GB team.

His brother said: “All our family are grateful for all our great memories.

“He enjoyed a full, interesting and enjoyable life – it was just too short. We will miss him dreadfully.”

Mr Macfie had been due to graduate this month after going to the US to study.
